1st Engineer Marcus Hillberg explains the ship’s drinking water system. Seawater is pumped through the two blue cartridge filters at the left and then through a series of osmotic membranes behind the blue pump in the center of the photo. These stages remove particles and the salt from the water. Then the freshwater is sent through carbon filters to remove pollutants and finally the water is exposed to high intensity ultraviolet light that kills any bacteria. When it is in your glass you would never know you were drinking water from the sea. Note the new replacement pumps on the shelf above, in case they have to repair the system at sea. Aboard the icebreaker Oden.
