Gerty Ward says, "we are sailing south, yet seeing more ice. One theory is that we are seeing chunks of land-fast ice that has broken free and is being blown by the wind. Note the dirt. It may have come on the ice from the land via wind and erosion." Aboard the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Louis S. St-Laurent, on the Beaufort Sea.
