Sarah R. Johnson points to the salty brine that has dropped out of the sea ice (with the help of gravity over time). The salty pieces resemble stalagtites in caves. They form because the salt is heavier than the water and slowly drops down out of the ice. Approximately 0.5 miles offshore of Utqiagvik, Alaska on the sea ice.
