The team crosses Lake Bonney to get to the sampling site on the opposite side. Although never in danger of falling into the lake (12-feet thick ice), the team walks on top of the white snow, avoiding the dark patches, which had meltwater ponds they could fall into. The meltwater ponds were about three feet deep. Lake Bonney, Antarctica.
