Jennifer Bault: "The handle is reattached to pull out the ice core. Cores usually come in three pieces. The first and second cores are generally about 75-95 cm in length and the last one is anywhere from 20 to 50 cm. Total thickness of the sea ice is about 2.2 meters in most spots." On the sea ice of the Ross Sea, Antarctica.
