A pulse oximeter reads the percent oxygen in Kate Miller's blood (top number) and her heart rate (bottom number). She took this photo the day she arrived at the South Pole. The oxygen in her blood is 84%, down from a 98%/99% baseline reading in New Zealand. The lower reading is due to the thinner air at the South Pole's high altitude (9,300 feet).
