Details

The Arctic diatom Melosira arctica forms into ropy, slimy strands under the sea ice. The brownish algae can often be seen on the underside of ice that has been flipped over by icebreaking activity. Near the USCGC Healy in the Makarov Basin in the Arctic Ocean. 86.70°, -149.48°.
