Caroline Melle prepares to pull apart a tussock soil core. She separates a sample of living roots of Eriophorum vaginatum, rhizomes of E. vaginatum, green leaves of E. vaginatum, and tosses away dead undecomposed plant litter. In Lab 6 at Toolik Field Station, Alaska.
