Josh Dugat: "Thermokarst is a ground surface feature characterized by uneven, pitted earth formations (resembling karst, which is formed by deteriorating limestone). Thermokarst forms when moisture in the soil freezes and expands, pushing soil up unevenly. When that same moisture thaws, uneven depressions form. This photo captures a road that was built in the 80's near the airstrip at Prudhoe Bay. Engineers did not foresee the thermokarst which made the road inoperable." Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
