Details

When moisture below the surface freezes and expands, it acts as a wedge, separating sections of earth above. Over years, the wedges can grow larger, causing separation between patches of earth to increase. On the surface, the earth forms polygon shapes as a result. Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
