The Arctic Interagency Visitor Center in Coldfoot has an educational exhibit explaining the relationship between vegetation and permafrost in the area. In this photo, plant roots extend into the active, or seasonally thawed, layer of soil. No roots extend into the permafrost. Coldfoot, Alaska.
