Bill Schmoker: "Occasionally a very dirty piece of sea ice will stick out like a sore thumb amongst the gleaming white ice pack. This piece of ice picked up a lot of dust or mud on or near a shore before drifting back out to open water. As it melts, the sediment becomes concentrated, making it look so dark." Aboard the USCGC Healy icebreaker in the Beaufort Sea.
