Bill Schmoker sends an XBT (expendable bathythermograph) over the aft rail to record temperature vs. depth through the water column. One hand is used to guide the thin wire that returns data to the ship from the probe. The lack of sea ice in this area is due to the Healy's proximity to the Mackenzie River which warms this part of the Beaufort Sea. Aboard the USCGC Healy icebreaker in Beaufort Sea northwest of the Mackenzie River delta.
