The first view of Ross Island was spectacular. Mt. Terror is a dormant volcano on the left that is 3262 meters tall and Mt. Erebus, on the right, is the most southern active volcano in the world with steam rising from its 3794 meter summit. This photo was taken at the western edge of the Ross Sea Polynya (a polynya an area of open water surrounded by sea ice), and shows the last open water we will see as we enter the sea ice of McMurdo Sound. Aboard the icebreaker Oden.
