Just before the seal research team released this crabeater seal, Jeff noticed that its whiskers were twisted into a helix or corkscrew shape. The scientists told me that this somehow helped the seal to detect krill in the dark water. Crabeater seals are krill eating specialists and the senses that they use to find food under the ice are still largely a mystery. On the sea ice, near the icebreaker Oden.
