Christian Nohr stands next to the CTD probe. Each of the numbered, grey tubes that surround this device will collect seven liters of seawater at specific depths as it is lowered more than a mile below the Oden. Each tube becomes a sample bottle when Christian sends signals down that cause the top and bottom of the tubes to close. All of the bottles together are called a rosette and they surround another package of instruments that measure water chemistry, temperature and depth. Like a space probe, the CTD will go to a distant and alien place far beneath the ship and bring back data and samples for the scientists to study. Christian is from Norway and works at a university in Sweden. Aboard the icebreaker Oden.
