Dr. Xiaojun Yuan fires a XBT temperature and depth probe over the rail of the Oden in the Drake Passage. The expendable sensor measures water temperature and depth as it plunges toward the bottom. A coil of copper wire unrolls behind the sensor and transmits data back to the ship as the probe sinks. Each XBT sensor can only be used once but it is much less expensive than using the large CTD sensor that requires the ship to come to a stop for over an hour as a crew of people use a crane to lower the sensor package over the side and return it to the ship. Aboard the icebreaker Oden.
