Second Officer Ivan Öström holds a sample of the steel that protects Oden’s bow when it breaks ice. This special steel is about 45 millimeters thick and is both strong and flexible. It is used on the front of the ship where the weight of the Oden is used to crush ice up to ten feet thick. Ivan explained that the steel is coated with a special epoxy paint that can withstand a whole season of icebreaking with hardly a scratch. Aboard the icebreaker Oden.
