Before recovery, the ship breaks up surrounding sea ice so that if pieces happen to float into the mooring operations, they are small enough to not be in the way or can be pushed aside by the bubbler. Aboard the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Louis S. St-Laurent, on the Beaufort Sea.
