Below is a listing of all the various usage classifications used for individual media files on the ARCUS Internet Media Archive. Each file is appended with the usage requirements in the "Usage" field in the media description. If there are any questions please contact : photo@arcus.org
Usage Class : Free - Publish Credit
Usage Description : A media file marked with the usage class of "Free - Publish Credit" indicates that it is freely available but you are required to publish a credit to the creator of the file in your final product. For example : you create a brochure using a media file created by 'John Q. Artist' that was provided by the ARCUS Internet Media Archive. On that brochure you would be required to print that the media file used was created by 'John Q. Artist' such as 'Mountain Photo by John Q. Artist'. No further fees or final approval is required. Exact required syntax of the credit is listed in the description of the media file.
Bottom Line : It's free... but give credit where credit is due!
Usage Class : Free - Notify
Usage Description : A media file marked with the usage class of "Free - Notify" indicates that it is freely available but you are required to first contact the creator of the media file and ask for permission regarding its use. The file will not have a fee associated with it but the creator has final discretion concerning its use and may require you publish a credit to the creator of the file in your final product. It may also require that you let the creator have final approval concerning the use of the file in your product. The creator may also not allow the use of the media in commercial applications and may only allow not-for-profit, educational, or government use.
Bottom Line : Before you get too attached... ask first!
Usage Class : Free - No Modification
Usage Description : A media file marked with the usage class of "Free - No Modification" indicates that it is freely available but you are not allowed to change the file in any way in your final product. Basic alteration is allowed such as scaling or the addition of a border or drop-shadow but any changing of the actual content, coloring, shape or the use of the file in a composition or collage will require prior consent and approval from the media creator.
Bottom Line : Its probably fine how it is... if you want to mess with it... ask first!
Usage Class : Per-Use Fee - Contact Creator
Usage Description : A media file marked with the usage class of "Per-Use Fee - Contact Creator" indicates that it is only currently available as a low-resolution watermarked preview image. If you would like to use the file you will need to contact the creator directly and discuss the use of the file as well as any fees associated with using it. Any use of the watermarked preview image is strictly forbidden. The creator may additionally have certain restrictions on the use of the file in its final context and may require prior consent or final authorization of its use.
Bottom Line : Not everything is free. Sorry!
