An A-Star helicopter takes the team over the Ross Ice Shelf. Helicopter pilots call this the "dirty ice". The dark spots are soil sediments brought from the continent. The ice shelf is continental glacial ice that covers the ocean. The ice shelf went around the island in the center of this image. The water on top of the ice is melted freshwater, not ocean water. Between Ross Island and the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica.
